MaRen Celebrates Her First…
Ladies First: Perspective Beyond Sight & Sound

MaRen Designs kicks off the New Year by showcasing another barrier breaker for our audience. Exploring the paths to purpose in this newsletter series, we bring to light the stories of ladies who were the first to achieve a goal, an accomplishment, a name for themselves – all while doing what gives their life meaning.

LADIES FIRST

Ladies First: Helen Keller in Honor of World Braille Day on the 4th of January.

The first deafblind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree, Helen Keller graduated from Radcliffe College of Harvard University in 1904 at the age of 24.

January 4th is World Braille Day, which shines a light on the importance of Braille as a means of communication for blind and partially sighted people.

Beyond her accomplishment of being the first deafblind person to earn a BA, Helen Keller led a life of worth and meaning. In addition to advocating for people with disabilities, she was a suffragist, pacifist, and radical socialist. She wrote 12 published books along with several articles and served as an advocate for people with disabilities.

The essential nature of Braille empowers blind and partially sighted people to not only fully realize their human rights, but it also enables them to participate in education, social inclusion, and freedom of expression and opinion.

MaRen’s Celebration of Diversity

Celebrating diversity in every shape, size, and aspect that makes us “different”, MaRen Designs brings the details of Helen Keller’s life to our audience to explore how a person with a disability can bring a new perspective to our conversations. Such a perspective and diverse view can reveal how much we share in common.

Just as Braille is a tool of empowerment providing equal footing to those who cannot see words clearly, MaRen Designs strives to empower young girls with tools that make them look and feel comfortable. Personalizing their own clothing with changeable straps, monograms, and button-on accents, young girls can enter a world of firsts with confidence and ease.

My best wishes for a healthy, happy, warm, and safe 2023!

When I was younger, I would have already bought every horoscope book in town so that “I could focus on my fate and future that year.”  I resigned myself to believing my life that year would be marked by the random, if not whimsical predictions of western sun signs and Chinese ancient believes, manifested in the form of modern-day animals. I relinquished my ability to be the creator of my own destiny and much like Sleeping Beauty, I lie there figuratively unconscious and unfocused in the belief that fate was my only savior. I am pleased to know that I have grown up a bit.

These days, I am more focused and tend to look introspectively and ask myself how can I do differently so that I can be a different and better me?  As a human, I struggle with wanting to focus on what is perfect or what looks perfect. As a mom, I struggle with the concept of being “the perfect mom”.  If I have learned anything it is that there is no perfect anything and as Brene Brown says: “perfectionism is a twenty-ton shield that we lug around, thinking it will protect us, when in fact it’s the thing that’s really preventing us from taking flight.”  I would be better off if I focused on those things within my circle of influence.

So, these days, I work on my relationships.   Oh perfect! Within my circle of influence, I can rise and affect change. As you know, the essence of the MaRen brand is all about affecting change and for moms and girls to build healthy relationships with their bodies and more importantly with each other.  Let’s keep that in focus as we ring in and celebrate all that this new year will bring.  Happy 2023!

Inspiringly,
Alisia
